Biodegradable

A biodegradable product will break down naturally in the environment by the actions of microorganisms. This process is natural and without harm to the environment.

Biodegradable materials break down naturally when exposed to air, moisture, and light. Assisted by microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi, the product is slowly broken down into natural elements of nature (such as water, carbon dioxide, and biomass). Although the term biodegradability is generally used for “green” products, there is no scientific restriction on the time it has to take to biodegrade. This makes the term somewhat misleading and open for the possibility greenwashing.
