Australian Standard (AS) 5810 represents that the plastic material is biodegradable in home composting conditions. This was created by the Standards Australia and certified by the Australian Bioplastic Association.

In order to comply to such standards, the following have to be met: (1) a minimum of 90% biodegradation of plastic materials, (2) a minimum of 90% of plastic materials should disintegrate, (3) there should be no toxic effect to compost, plants and earthworms, (4) hazardous substances such as heavy metals should not be present above maximum allowed level, and (5) that the plastic materials should contain more than 50% organic materials.

As a consequence of the differences between home compost system and industrial compost facility, the testing for this standard has a maximum of 12 months.
