Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS)

The Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is an international certification standard that sets strict environmental and social benchmarks for organic fiber production, processing, manufacturing, packaging, labeling, trading, and distribution of textiles made from organic fibers. The standard covers the entire supply chain from fiber production to finished products and includes criteria for waste water, energy consumption, chemical use, and working conditions in the production facilities. The certification ensures that products labeled as “organic” have met rigorous environmental and social standards for organic fiber production and processing.

The certification is administered and maintained by the Global Textile Standard, which was founded by four founding organizations namely: International Association Natural Textile Industry (IVN), Japan Organic Cotton Association (JOCA), Organic Trade Association (OTA), and Soil Association (SA). The certification process involves inspection and certification of the production facilities and the products, followed by regular monitoring and re-certification to ensure that the standard’s criteria are continuously met.

The GOTS certification provides assurance to consumers and retailers that the organic textile products they purchase have been produced in a responsible and sustainable manner and have met the highest standards for organic fiber production and processing.
